In the wake of the second attempt on former President Donald Trump’s life, President Joe Biden on Sunday expressed deep relief while condemning acts of political aggression. The sitting president, briefed on the grave incident, emphasized the urgency of halting such violence in the country.
In a public statement, Biden expressed his gratitude toward the swift actions of the Secret Service and associated law enforcement agencies for their unyielding vigilance. “A suspect is now in custody, and I extend my commendation to the Secret Service for their diligence in protecting the former President and those in his vicinity,” Biden said. He added that he was “relieved” to hear that Trump had escaped the ordeal unscathed.
Biden further remarked on the ongoing investigation, stressing the need for a full accounting of the circumstances surrounding the event. “As I’ve iterated frequently, there is no tolerance for political violence in our nation, nor any form of violence. I have directed my administration to ensure that the Secret Service has all the tools, resources, and support necessary to safeguard the former President.”
Speaker Johnson Gives Thanks After Trump Survives Second Assassination Attempt
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and his wife, Kelly, expressed profound gratitude in the aftermath of the attempt on Trump’s life. Departing from Mar-a-Lago, where they had spent several hours with the former President, Johnson took to X (formerly Twitter) to share their thanks.
“Kelly and I are departing Mar-a-Lago after spending time with President Trump, and we are thanking God for protecting him once again today,” Johnson posted. “No leader in the annals of American history has endured such ceaseless assaults and yet remained so resolute. He is indomitable.”
The suspected assailant, identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, was apprehended in connection with the incident. Armed with an AK-47, Routh had reportedly been positioned outside the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, while Trump was playing the fifth hole.
Authorities detailed how the Secret Service opened fire on Routh after spotting the weapon through a chain-link fence. The suspect fled the scene but was subsequently arrested in neighboring Martin County, according to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradsha
